Hand Hygiene Mini-Module

Learn basic information about what hand hygiene within healthcare settings inlcuding the three types, different indications and proper procedural steps for handwashing.

Audience: Healthcare service providers within hospital and outpatient clinic settings

Responsibilities: E-Learning development, graphic design, mockups, audio narration, closed caption transcription

Tools Used: Articulate Storyline 360, Adobe Illustrator & XD, Google Docs, and GitHub

My Process

I referenced the SAM framework to design this mini module. I drew inspiration for this concept from the yearly competencies that were required to be completed during my time as a certified medical assistant. The problem arose from the time I saw that was needed to find old company handouts, review and reference them as we completed our competency packets. I developed this experience to provide review information in one place and to test the competency of healthcare professionals on the types of hand hygiene practices, indications and proper protocol handwashing in clinic settings.

Text-Based Storyboard

I crafted a blueprint for the project, a text-based storyboard, in Google Docs to chart the learner journey, plan content delivery and plan the design and feel of the module. My goal was to immerse the user in a simulated but prompt experience where they would be engaging in a clinic onboarding introduction and then tested by the administrative nurse manager character. As I continued to develop the module and undergo more iterative cycles, I updated the storyboard to reflect the changes. However, below you will find a link to the original version.

Visual Mockups

I designed the clinic exam background in Adobe Illustrator. I drafted the visual mockups in Adobe XD prior to programming it in Articulate Storyline 360. I included a nurse character in my design to craft a more engaging and authentic onboarding scenario experience.

Closed Captioning

I used Articulate Storyline 360 tools to transcribe the audio and to create closed captioning and ensure a more audio accessible experience for the user.

Development

This project went through various cycles of iteration. After completely developing the first version of my storyboard in Articulate Storyline, I realized that there were several changes necessary. I rephrased the way in which the user would encounter specific information throughout the module, redesigned slide layouts as my evaluation of their effectiveness changed and altered the programming of some triggers.

Key Takeaways

I really enjoyed creating this project and was happy that I was able to give honor to some of my past roles as support staff within healthcare. In respect to my bio-visualization background, I was very happy that I was able to explore new design techniques and include new elements in this project.
